Ashtanga Yoga

Today begins the journey to a new You

RAJA YOGA/ASHTANGA YOGA

The DSY believes that Yoga can make a difference to our lives, we believe that only just a short few minutes daily or a weekly class can help us deal with the stresses of life. We know that Yoga helps to raise of sense of well-being and improve our state of health.

We have opened the DSY to be of service to people, we are here to help. We will be working with the hospitals and the business community and all the social services in the area, we will have classes for school kids, their teachers and the parents, we will have classes for the elderly and for people who may be suffering. With the quality of experience the teachers bring we will have a range of Yoga practices on offer- from the stretchy classes to soft gentle Yoga to relaxation and a range meditation practices. At the DSY we have something to offer everyone, our focus is on the community and we want to help.

All the teachers and staff at the DSY are passionate about Yoga and we want to create a space here in Phibsboro on Dublin’s North side where you can drop in for a cup of tea and have a look at what we are doing.

WHAT YOGA IS

Lots of people think they know what Yoga is, maybe they have been to a class and they come away with an idea that they have practiced Yoga, this is a very limited view of what Yoga is, I am often asked what type of Yoga I teach and I usually find this difficult to answer, it seems to be that anyone can invent their own Yoga and put a name in front of it and off they go. This leads to more confusion for people and today there are so many different types of Yoga out there that it becomes hard to know what Yoga is. People now have become more concerned with the type of Yoga they are going to rather than looking deeper into what Yoga is in its entirety.

At the Dublin School of Yoga, we teach and practice Raja Yoga also known as Ashtanga Yoga which literally means 8 limbs of Yoga these 8 limbs will be describes later.

Yoga is an applied Science and the application of its principles brings about a state of health and wellbeing, on the physical side Yoga develops energy to cope, on the mental side it brings a quiet peaceful mind and on the spiritual side a sense of oneness.

SOURCE OF YOGA

The source of all our suffering and problems lie in AVIDYA (ignorance wrong knowledge and a false sense of the self) with the practice of Raja Yoga we develop:

  • A positive attitude
  • Improve mental potential
  • Balance of the systems within
  • Combat social problems
  • Promote the Self

To practice Yoga, it is not essential that you leave your house and go to into oblivion nor is it essential to become a renunciation, marriage is not an obstacle and you don’t have to become a vegetarian, the real aim of Yoga is to attain peace and harmony within, to reach this you don’t have to give up anything nor do you need to change any of your normal lifestyle or routines.

Yoga is practical and has nothing to do with philosophical flights of fancy Yoga has a special role to play in today’s world, its practice alone can remove mental and physical afflictions it can bring joy into our hearts and homes, Yoga does not lay down extraordinary conditions of self-discipline and behavioral patterns.

Maggie

In the eight years that I have been a  yoga student of Cormac Lennon, Yoga has been a very positive contribution to my life. It has provided me with great physical mental and emotional well being. It brings deep peace and connection, self acceptance and self  responsibility. Attending yoga on a regular basis has given me the ability manage stress in my work place with calm and compassion. My experience of yoga has helped me to  keep healthy, choose life, have self respect and respect for those I come in contact with. Yoga is for everyone.

I have Muscular Dystrophy. Over the years, we have been working on the breathing, keeping what i have strong and building on that strength.  This has helped me in a lot of tough times when I start to hyperventilate, I am able to regain control of my breathing again with a few helpful tips from class.
